The AGE Good Food Guide
Improbable as it may seem, we have not found such refined Austrian cooking elsewhere other than cosmopolitan Vienna. That it is in the old-world dining room of a country motel is even more extraordinary. The only clue to the passing motorist with a smattering of German in the sign Wiener Küche. The motel is run by former airline pilot Captain  Staberhofer (hence the motel's name) and his wife Elisabeth. Her white veal or crumbed pork schnitzel and delicate apfelstrudel are exemplary. But her kitchen is not afraid to experiment. Occasionally, Elisabeth will present Australian game in Austrian style, such as kangaroo fillets with light and fluffy herbed bread dumplings and red cabbage. Look also for such delights as Sachertorte mit Schlag ( the famous chocolate cake with whipped cream).

The sign " Wiener Küche" outside this motel on the western outskirts of Sale is apt to surprise the unsuspecting wayfarer. But we have a letter from the Austrian Ambassador to confirm that here is indeed a dining room specialising in fine Viennese cuisine. "The Wiener Schnitzel is first-class and the Apfelstrudel is certainly among the best you can get outside of Austria" he writes. The motel is run by a retired airline pilot (hence the name) and his wife, Elisabeth Staberhofer who has worked in the Austrian diplomatic service and is a wonderful cook. Apart from traditional dishes like Mutti used to make, there may be ostrich fillets with sauerkraut and almond-rolled potato nuggets, and some mouth watering Austrian cakes and sweets.

Recommended  Dr Otmar Koler (Austrian Ambassador to Australia)

"Rarely do we recommend motel restaurants, where menus tend to ho-hum and chefs flighty. The Captain's Lodge International, run by a retired airline pilot, Captain  Staberhofer, and his wife Elisabeth, who worked in the Austrian diplomatic service, is distinguished by its fine Austrian cuisine. Indeed, we haven't found Austrian or German food as good as Mrs. Staberhofer's in any Melbourne restaurant. Everything is freshly prepared, using meat from an Austrian butcher in Frankston, home-grown vegetables and fruits, and bread from an Austrian baker in Orbost. The pan-fried white veal schnitzel is superb, and we were delighted by the Bauernschmaus of roast and smoked pork, sausage, sauerkraut, potato cake and light-as-feather dumpling. Wonderful apple strudel, Sachertorte and other home-baked cakes too. A visiting ambassador has written in the visitors book;" Hier gibt es Wiener Luft" (Here is a breath of Vienna). We agree.
